I’m in love with this sunflower mini bag. It is really easy, made up with two crochet granny sunflower square and putting them together into a bag that just makes me happy.

 The granny square? This is the simple granny square!

Crochet Sweet Sunflower Mini Handbag Pattern instructions

Making this Sweet Sunflower Mini Handbag can be done in about two hours.
This Sweet Sunflower Mini Handbag is made up with 2 crochet squares. The square is worked in the round. The squares are crocheted together on sides and it makes also the handle.  
The direction shown are for one size.
The square measures 12 x 12 cm, 4.7 x 4.7 inch. 
The square itself could be perfect for summer wearables or summer blankets and for many other projects as well.

Yarn: You can use any yarn you like - for this project is great to use up scrap yarns! 

Small amounts of any worsted weight yarn – the pattern was made with yarn:

Johanka: 55% bavlna + 45% akryl, 250g, 50 g / 160 m

and I chose these colors:

color A = brown
color B = orange
color C = yellow / gold
color D = white 

You could certainly make this sweet crochet bag with another color as well.

The nice thing about this Sweet Sunflower Mini Handbag is that the bag can be made in a variety of different yarn weights.

You could certainly use this pattern in heavier or lighter yarns, using different hook sizes as needed.

You can use up any scrappy yarn you have. This design means that it doesn’t use very much yarn. 

The crochet hook 4.0 mm.

Pattern Notes

1) The Sweet Sunflower Mini Handbag is made up with two crochet granny squares.

2) The square itself could be perfect for summer wearables or summer blankets and for many other projects as well.

3) The square is worked in the round. 

4) The squares are joined together with one side open.

5) The topper part creates the cover - closing with the button. 

6) The Sweet Sunflower Mini Handbag is suited for beginners. Some skills needed are chaining, changing the colors, working in the round, and working puff stitch and 4dc-cluster (dc4tog). 

7) Puff stitch and 4dc cluster pattern works up to look like small leaves

Difficulty Level: Level 1 – EASY for BEGINNERS 

US crochet terms:

SlSt – slip stitch
CH/s – chain/s
SC - single crochet
HDC - half double
DC - double crochet
SK - skip
T - turn
ST/s - stitch(es)
REP - repeat
YO – yarn over
BLO - back loop only

Special stitches:

Puff Stitch:  Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop to the height of a double crochet (3 loops on hook).  
Then yarn over again and insert hook into the same stitch (insert the hook always into the stitch where you are creating your puff stitch) and pull up another loop (5 loops on hook).  
Yarn over again, insert hook into the same space and pull up another loop. (7 loops on hook).
Yarn over again, insert hook into the same space and pull up another loop. (9 loops on hook).  
Pull yarn through all loops.  Chain 1 to lock in the stitch.

4dc cluster = dc4together = Double Crochet Four Together 
4 dc cluster Stitch instructions: 
Yarn over and insert the hook always into the stitch where you are creating your cluster stitch. Yarn over again and pull through 2 loops. There will be 2 loops on the hook.
Repeat 3 more times. Each time adds 1 more loop to the hook. There will be 5 loops on the hook for a dc puff stitch. Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook. Finish with chain one.  An extra chain stitch is often used to secure the puff stitch firmly. 

Sweet Sunflower Mini Handbag

WRITTEN PATTERN

To start a granny square sunflower mini handbag, you will need to make 2 crochet granny sunflower squares.

SQUARE

Crochet hook 4.00 mm

Make a magic ring

work in rounds

color A 
R1: ch3 (1dc), 15 dc in magic ring. Sl st in 3rd ch from beg to close the round (16dc)

color B
R2: This row is comprised of puff stitches (described above)
ch1, (puff stitch + ch1) in each st around. Sl st on top of first puff st to close the round (16 puff st and ch1 between them)

Color C
R3: This row is worked in 4dc clusters (described above)
4dc cluster - at beg consists of ch2 (1dc) and dc3together, ch2,
in each ch2sp work 4dc cluster + ch2.
Sl st on top of first 4dc cluster  (16 4dc-clusters and ch2 between them)

color D
R4: Join color D in any ch2space (corner) in previous round.  
corner: ch3 (1dc) + 2dc in first ch2sp, ch3, 3dc in same first ch2sp,
side: 3dc in next 3 ch2sp,
*(3dc, ch3, 3dc) in next ch2sp, 3dc in next 3 ch2sp*, rep from * to * 3 times.
Sl st in 3rd ch from beg to close the round
(4 corners: 3dc+ch3+3dc and 3 3dc groups between corners)

R5: sl st in next 3 st to move in ch3sp (corner)
corner: ch3 (1dc) + 1dc in first ch3sp, ch2, 2dc in same first ch3sp,
side: 1dc in each st from previous round till you reach corner (15 st along side) 
*(2dc, ch2, 2dc) in next ch3sp, 1dc in next 15 st*, rep from * to * 3 times.
Sl st in 3rd ch from beg to close the round
(4 corners: 2dc+ch2+2dc and 15 dc between corners)

NOTE: if you want to have your granny square bigger, repeat round R5 as many times as you wish

R6 / last round
sl st in next 2 st to move in ch2sp (corner)
corner: ch1, 3sc in ch2sp
side: 1sc in each st from previous round till your reach next corner (19 sc along side)
*3sc in next ch2sp, 1sc in next 19 st*, rep from * to * 3 times.
Sl st in 1st ch from beg to close the round
(4 corners: 3sc and 19 sc between corners)
I like to use an invisible join for a nice finish instead of the sl stitch join. 
Fasten off yarn and weave in the ends.

Repeat R1 - R6 and make 2nd Sunflower Granny square  

Make sides and handle and join Crochet Sunflower Granny Squares Together

Color B
With your yarn and hook 
Start with a slip knot
Join color B in any corner in last round (R6).
R1: ch1, 1hdc in each st around last round (R6), BLO 
Work along 3 sides and leave 4th side open
Don’t turn your work.
Continue crocheting and make a handle.
Chain a foundation chain as long as you wish.
Make sure the chain is not twisted.
Join chain with a sl st in fist ch from beg of round.

R2: ch1, 1hdc in each st around, place 1hdc in each st from previous round and in each chain of foundation chain, sl st in 1st ch to close the round

R3 = repeat R2, 1hdc in each st around

If you want to have the side of your Sunflower Bag wider, just repeat R2 as many times as you wish.

Time to crochet the squares together!  
R4: Join the squares together, making sure they are wrong sides together and inside.
The right side of first square is facing you, the right side of second square is facing down.

Remove your hook from the loop on hook and pull the loop through the single crochet in the corner, BLO, on the second square’s corner.

You can join the loop in any corner.

Work 1 hdc in next st on the first square and 1 sl st BLO in next st on the second square. 

Repeat along 3 sides: 1 hdc in next st on the first square and 1 sl st BLO in next st on the second square.  
Join 3 sides and leave 4th side (top side) open.

Remember not to make your stitches too tight and not too loose. 
I like to use an invisible join for a nice finish instead of the sl stitch join. 

Fasten off yarn and weave in the ends.

Top Side and Closing

With your yarn and hook 
Start with a slip knot
Join color D in corner st of the 4th side on the first Square 

R1: ch2, 1dc in each st from round (R6), BLO, 
ch2, sl st in corner st of the 4th side on the second Square, turn your work, sl st in next 2 chains of just finished chain, 
then work on top of the second square: 1dc in each st from last round (R6) BLO 
close the row with a sl st in 2nd ch from beg row or I like to use an invisible join for a nice finish instead of the sl stitch join. 

Now sew a large button in the middle of just finished R1 

My Sweet Sunflower Mini Handbag measures:

Square is 12 cm x 12 cm, 5 inch x 5 inch 

Side is 2,5 cm / 1 inch wide

Handle / Strap is 80 cm / 31 inch long.

I absolutely love this Granny Square Sunflower design and the button closing on top of the handbag.
