Granny Sweater with Color Contrasts and Geometric Patterns - Granny Checkboard Gradient
Beautiful day! Let's get started crocheting the unconventional Granny sweater Dante, which I named the Granny Chessboard of Shades!
The magic of the sweater lies in the alternation of stripes; the colors form an interesting geometric pattern, an original combination of horizontal and vertical lines.
And what's great? The construction, cut, and pattern are suitable even for beginners!
Why You Will Love the Granny Checkboard Gradient Sweater:
Originality: The design breaks conventions—each sleeve features a different stripe direction (one horizontal, the other vertical), creating a fresh, modern look.
Geometric Precision: The pattern utilizes the clever technique of an expanding rectangle crocheted from the corner, ensuring professional and accurate right angles.
Stripe Dynamics: Diagonal lines form across the sweater body, which, in contrast with the vertical and horizontal sleeve arrangements, lend the sweater incredible visual depth.
Ideal for Gradients and Contrast: The construction is designed to perfectly showcase color gradients (shading) from light to dark, or sharp color contrasts.
Sophisticated Shaping: You will master professional, sectional shaping of the shoulders and body, ensuring the sweater has a tailored, well-fitting silhouette.
A Distinctive Piece: You will gain a unique, handmade original that is guaranteed to turn heads.

The pattern is prepared for a Women's Size S/M.
The sweater has a classic fit that allows for layering (e.g., wearing a T-shirt underneath).
The size can be very easily adjusted to smaller or larger sizes, for children or adults, by modifying the number of stitches and rows. Recommendations on how to adjust the sweater size can be found in the instructions below.
The sweater is crocheted as a simple classic sweater with long sleeves and a waist length. It is suitable for wear in cooler weather, from autumn through spring. It is crocheted from the bottom up and grows diagonally. Individual phases are described in detail later in the pattern.
Construction
The sweater is crocheted from the bottom up, growing diagonally in one piece.
Phase 1: Both the front and back panels are crocheted simultaneously in one piece, up to the length under the arm (armhole).
Phase 2 & 3: Next, the upper part of the front panel is crocheted together with the front part of the sleeve, and the neckline is shaped.
Phase 4: The upper part of the back panel follows, together with the back of the sleeve, which precisely mirrors the front panel.
Phase 6: The sleeve on the second side is crocheted only in the final phase (into the armhole), which gives it its unique vertical lines.
Optional: You can crochet an edging around the neckline, sleeves, or the bottom of the sweater.
Pattern and Fit Details
The sweater is crocheted in rows, with the sides of the sweater body being straight, without any increase. The sleeves are also worked straight, without tapering.
The entire sweater is worked in the Granny Stitch, which is made up of clusters of 3 double crochet stitches (DC). In the corners where increasing occurs, the corner stitch is worked: 3DC + 2ch + 3DC
In the pattern below, I have chosen a classic fit with a waist length and long sleeves.
If you prefer a longer sweater or longer sleeves, you can easily adjust the size. You can simply increase the length by adding more rows to the "body" of the sweater or to the sleeves.
I crocheted the sweater using Dante yarn and chose a combination of four colors.
You can, of course, use a combination of other favorite yarns and shades.
Measurement During Work
Regular Check: Regularly lay your pieces flat and measure them to ensure you are meeting the intended size.
Note on Stretch: The Granny Stitch, when crocheted loosely, can stretch slightly, especially with some cotton or natural fibers (linen, bamboo, etc.). Account for this potential stretching.
Sweater Ease
Plan Your Ease: Garment patterns usually include the concept of "ease," which is the difference between the finished garment measurements and your body measurements.
Choose Your Fit: Decide what level of ease you prefer (fitted, classic, loose, oversized) and adjust the size accordingly so that the garment fits well and suits your preference.
Pattern Consistency and Even Tension
Key to Neatness: Maintaining even tension throughout the entire project is key to a neat and well-defined Granny Stitch pattern.
Consistent Yarn: Try to keep the yarn equally loose and your tension consistent throughout the entire crocheting process.
Before You Begin
Size and Yarn Planning
Before you start working, I recommend thinking about the desired length and width you would like.
Base Size: This pattern is prepared for a Women's Size S/M with a wider fit.
Size Adjustment: The size can be easily adjusted to smaller or larger by modifying the number of stitches in a row and the total number of rows. Don't forget that you will need more yarn for a larger size.
Basic Crocheting Rules
DC Substitute: 3 chain stitches at the beginning of the row serve as a substitute for the first double crochet.
Color Changing Rule
The sweater is crocheted using 4 colors.
Each color is used for 2 rows (i.e., changing color every 2 rows).
The colors are ordered from lightest to darkest (A, B, C, D).
Sweater Measurements
(Size: Women's S/M, Relaxed Fit)
The measurements were taken on the garment laid flat, before the yarn is stretched/relaxes.
Sweater Body
Length to Armhole: 36 cm (approx 14.17 in)
Width: 45 cm (approx 17.72 in)
Total Length: 57 cm (approx 22.44 in)
Neckline

Height (Front): 10 cm (approx 3.94 in)
Height (Back): 2 cm (approx 0.79 in)
Sleeve
Length (from armhole to cuff): 46 cm (approx 18.11 in)
Length (from neckline to cuff): 55 cm (approx 21.65 in)
