Lightweight Lace Shrug: Floral Motif Granny Squares
Where the elegance of lace squares meets the COLORS OF CHRISTMAS. A charming accessory crocheted from fine WOOL.
Prepare for a crochet journey full of elegance and romance! I am delighted to present this pattern for a romantic lace shrug that will become a magical addition to your wardrobe.
It is perfect for layering over a tank top, T-shirt, or dress – beautifully covering the shoulders while adding a unique flair to any outfit. I designed this shrug using squares with a delicate pattern that creates an elegant geometric structure, perfectly highlighted by fine lace edging with picots.
For this model, I chose a thin, lightweight wool-blend yarn with a touch of nylon. From the very first touch, its softness inspired me to create something delicate yet playful. The result is this blooming flower "granny square," which blends a festive lightness with a structured diamond-lace design. The overall romantic look is completed by the decorative edging around the body and sleeves, giving the shrug a cohesive and professional finish.
- Yarn: "Příběh Vánoc" (100 g / 450 m, wool + nylon) or any other "sock" yarn with gradual color transitions.
- Hook: 3 – 3.5 mm (depending on your tension).
- Notions: Scissors, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and stitch markers for easier orientation in the corners.
- Construction: Individual squares.
- Size: The following pattern is prepared for a women's size S/M.

Style and Customization
This shrug features a classic fit, designed to be worn over a T-shirt or tank top. The size can be easily adjusted for children or adults by simply changing the number of stitches and rows in each square.
The shrug covers the shoulders and reaches mid-back. It is a timeless piece suitable for year-round wear. It is crocheted square by square, which are then joined into a rectangle, and the entire piece is finished with a lace border. The pattern uses single and double crochets interspersed with chain stitches, creating an airy, lace-like floral design.
You can easily adjust the length by adding more rows to each square. Both the body and the sleeves are straight, without any increasing or decreasing.
Tip for Upsizing: If you wish to make the square larger (for example, for a blanket or poncho), repeat rows 5 and 6. This will allow the square to expand regularly while the diamond pattern continues smoothly toward the edges.
Step-by-Step Instructions
The pattern is divided into three phases: creating the center flower, transitioning to a square shape, and expanding to your desired size.
- Center: Start from the middle with a magic ring and twelve petals made of "puffy" clusters. In the following rows, shape this circular base into a square using chain arches and defined corners.
- Technique: We use a method of ending rows with double crochets instead of chain stitches. This allows you to start the next row directly in the middle of an arch without needing to slip stitch across.
- Expansion: After completing the basic six rows, you can continue to expand the square as needed by repeating the principle of adding groups in the corners and along the sides.
Blocking: The Final Touch for a Perfect Shape
Do not underestimate this step – blocking is what distinguishes ordinary crochet from a masterpiece. For wool-blend yarns like "Příběh Vánoc," this process is highly effective.
- Why block? It standardizes the dimensions of all squares, levels out the stitches (straightening edges and sharpening corners), and softens the material, giving it a beautiful drape.
- Process: Gently wash the square in lukewarm water with a wool detergent. Do not wring or twist; simply press the water out into a towel. Use stainless steel pins to pin the square onto a blocking board or foam mat. Secure the corners first, then the sides. Let it dry naturally and completely.
Dimensions (Size S/M)
Body of the Shrug (Rectangle):
- Height: 39 cm
- Width: 64 cm
Sleeve (Joined part):
- Length: 10 cm
- Width: 20 cm
Measurements are taken from the garment laid flat before the yarn stretches or settles with wear.
I believe you will enjoy crocheting this shrug as much as I did. It is a perfect project to relax with, and the satisfaction of finishing each square will keep you motivated. Don't be afraid to experiment with colors, and remember that blocking is key—you'll see the lace pattern magically bloom before your eyes.
I wish you the best of luck with your squares and the final shrug. May this romantic piece bring you joy every time you wear it. If you decide to share your finished creation on social media, don't forget to tag me—I’d love to see your beautiful color versions!
Happy crocheting!
