Welcome to the SAMBA Fingerless Mitts pattern!
These practical and stylish mitts have been designed to be the perfect warm accessory for your Samba set (beanie and cowl). The mitts feature an original puff stitch pattern on the top side, while the palm is worked in a stretchy ribbed pattern for maximum comfort and flexibility.
Constructed from a single rectangle with elegant tapering and special seaming for the thumb, this design ensures comfortable wear and a professional finish. You can also easily adjust the size of the mitts to perfectly fit your hand. And if you don't have the Samba yarn available, don't worry! You can substitute it with any of your favorite yarns. For the best warmth during cold days, we recommend choosing a yarn with a wool blend.
Crochet yourself a warm and stylish accessory that will carry you through the cold weather with elegance!
I wish you much joy with your crocheting, and I look forward to seeing photos of your colorful, cosy winter hat, an original neckwarmer cowl and Practical Fingerless Mitts!

US crochet terms:
SlSt – slip stitch
CH/s – chain/s
SC - single crochet
SK - skip
T - turn
ST/s - stitch(es)
REP - repeat
YO – yarn over
The construction of these fingerless mitts is based on a simple yet effective method:
Basic Shape: The mitt is crocheted as a single flat rectangular piece in rows worked back and forth.
Division: The rectangle is lengthwise divided into two sections:
- Cuff: Created by flexible ribbing using SL ST BLO.
- Hand Body / Top Section: Formed by a combination of a textured Puff Stitch pattern and SC BLO ribbing.
Tapering: The mitt is tapered in height near the fingers by switching to shorter SL ST (slip stitches) at the end of the hand body section, which subtly curves the top edge to fit the fingers better.
Final Seaming and Thumbhole: The finished rectangle is seamed along the long edge.
A section is intentionally left unseamed to form the thumbhole opening.
This opening is then edged with crochet for a smooth finish.
Row Counting
Careful row counting is essential for the regular repetition of the pattern and for the accurate alignment of the edges during the final seaming.
Crochet Tension and Stretch
The stitch pattern tends to be firm. Crochet loosely to ensure the cowl is sufficiently flexible and comfortable.
Yarn Tension
Pay close attention to your yarn tension (avoid tightening). Strive to crochet with a consistent, slightly relaxed tension.
- Loose crocheting ensures the pattern will be comfortable and stretchy, and the puff texture will be fluffy and soft.
- A tension that is too loose could lead to a shapeless look, while a tension that is too tight would result in a stiff and inflexible fabric.
Before You Begin: Before you start crocheting, consider the following:
- The length of the cuff and the length of the hand body (number of stitches per row).
- The desired looseness/fit around your hand (number of rows).
- The desired fit around the thumb (number of skipped stitches).
Sizing Adjustments: The required width of the mitt can be easily adjusted during crocheting by changing the number of rows. Keep in mind that you will need more yarn for a larger circumference.
