Crocheted SUN summer hat with a wide brim 

Ideal for sunny days, when the wide brim reliably protects from the sun's rays. 

Raffiana Vlnika

200 g / 360 m / 100 % polypropylene

Yarn Consumption for Women's Size M: approx. 1/3 of a skein

Size: Women's, head circumference 54 cm

Hook: 4.0 mm

You will also need: Scissors, needle, stitch markers

 

 

Difficulty Level: Level 1 – very easy for ultimate beginners  

US crochet term:
SlSt – slip stitch
CH/s – chain/s
SC – simple crochet
SK - skip
T - turn
SP - space
ST/s - stitch(es)

Pattern Notes
In this pattern, you will encounter basic stitches: single crochets, double crochets, and chain stitches.

Important Crocheting Notes:

• 1 chain stitch (ch) at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch. Always crochet the first stitch into the first stitch of the previous row.
• 3 chain stitches (ch) at the beginning of a row count as a double crochet.
• The hat is crocheted in closed rounds, which means that each round is joined with a slip stitch upon completion.
• The number given in square brackets [ ] in the pattern indicates the total number of stitches in that round after it has been crocheted.

How to make it: The upper part (the "flat top") is gradually increased until you are satisfied with its width.

Then, crochet the body of the hat without increasing – and once you are happy with its length, we'll move on to the brim.

The brim gradually widens row by row; it is flat and does not ripple.

WOMEN'S Size

• Hat Circumference: 55 cm (approx. 21.65 inches)
• Crown (Flat Top) Diameter: 18 cm (approx. 7.1 inches)
• Hat Body / Height: 6 cm (approx. 2.36 inches)
• Brim Width: 8.5 cm (approx. 3.35 inches)
• Total Hat Width (Brim Edge to Edge): 35 cm (approx. 13.78 inches)

Measurements are taken with the item laid flat, before the yarn stretches or relaxes.

Construction: Top-Down
The hat consists of two main parts:

• the hat body
• the brim
• I crocheted the entire hat to be as airy, open, and truly comfortable to wear as possible.
• The upper part / hat body / is quite openwork. For crocheting it, I used double crochets and chain stitches, which ensures pleasant breathability.
• The brim, on the other hand, is dense and firm, crocheted with single crochets that are quite tightly tensioned. Thanks to this, it reliably protects your eyes from the sun and holds its shape perfectly!
• Furthermore, the hat is wonderfully packable – it easily fits into a handbag, beach bag, or backpack.
• The pattern is really easy and absolutely suitable even for beginners. I don't use any wires, stiffeners, or glues to reinforce the brim. The brim beautifully holds its shape, exactly as it should, all on its own!
• The pattern below is prepared for a smaller women's size S/M.
• You can easily adjust the size to make it smaller or larger – whether for children or adults – by simply modifying the number of stitches and rows. All recommendations on how to customize your hat can be found in the instructions below.
• I crocheted the hat using two yarn colors, but of course, you can also create it from a single color, or go wild and crochet it in any colors you like, exactly according to your imagination!
• Crocheting proceeds from top to bottom, so you have the opportunity to try on the hat as you go and easily adjust the size to ensure it fits you perfectly.

TIPS and Recommendations

For the brim, I changed colors after every 4 rows to achieve a nice striped effect.

How to increase / Single Crochet (SC)

Goal: To create two stitches in the current row from one stitch of the previous row.

Step-by-step:

• Insert your hook into the stitch where you want to increase.
• Yarn over and pull up a loop through the stitch. (You have 2 loops on your hook.)
• Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. The first single crochet is done.
• Insert your hook again into the SAME stitch (where you just crocheted the first SC).
• Yarn over and pull up a loop through the stitch. (You have 2 loops on your hook.)
• Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. The second single crochet in this stitch is done.

Result: Where you had one stitch in the previous row, you now have two stitches in the current row originating from the same spot.

Consistency of the Openwork Pattern and Even Tension: Maintaining even tension throughout the entire project is crucial for a neat and good-looking openwork pattern. Try to keep your yarn tension consistent.

Joining Rows: Pay attention to how the pattern specifies joining rows. Adhere to the same method for joining rows and also for turning at the end of a row; this will create uniform, clean lines of yarn on your hat.
