Thanks a million, my crochet friends! Wishing you joy and color through yarn.

I truly believe in the magic of creativity.

Have you ever heard of temperature crochet?

It’s an absolutely amazing and unique way to record the passage of an entire year into one original project! And that is exactly what we are going to create together – a colorful, cheerful, and one-of-a-kind Temperature Turtle that will reflect every mood of the weather.

Imagine how her colors will change from month to month! One moment the shell will glow with spring green, the next it will be wrapped in summer orange tones, and in winter, it will dress in frosty blue. Every row of our turtle’s shell will tell its own weather story, and we will create it together.

Why start a TEMPERATURE PROJECT?

I am truly passionate about colorful crochet! It’s a super fun way to create something vibrant and meaningful, often using color combinations you wouldn't normally choose yourself. It’s wonderful how the weather plays with us, and I’m so happy to capture its "moods" for future generations – simply put, I’m creating a colorful weather diary out of yarn!

Whether you call it a temperature, climate, or sky project – it’s a fabulous way to record weather changes in a year-long project. And it’s super easy!

How does it work?

You record the daily high temperature (or the average, maximum, or midday temperature – the choice is yours). This temperature corresponds to a specific color range of yarn in our chart. You simply crochet one row or strip in that color every day. At the end, you will have a beautiful, unique, and original record of how the weather played out over 365 days!

Our Project: This year, we are crocheting a Temperature Turtle together – a concept of a crocheted pillow/toy. Her shell will gradually grow throughout the year, where each day's strip represents the temperature.

Before we dive into temperature crocheting

Let’s create a rainbow wonder together!

How to start: Colors and Yarn

img_5310.jpeg

Before we pick up our hooks, we have a few important decisions to make:

Step 1: Temperature Scale and Colors

You can choose to use a traditional color scale with blue for cold days, green/yellow for spring, and orange/red for hot days. OR you can create a completely original scale based on your own taste (e.g., only cool tones, only warm tones, or perhaps pink-purple for a girl or blue-grey for a boy).

Tips for selection: Take a look at the temperatures from previous years in your area. Where I live, the temperature usually ranges from about -5°C to 35°C (23°F to 95°F). I have decided to use 19 colors and divide the temperature scale by 3°C (approx. 5-6°F) per color.

  • The fewer degrees per color (e.g., 1°C), the more colors you will need, but the transitions will be smoother.
  • The more degrees per color (e.g., 5°C), the fewer colors you need, but you will need more skeins of each individual color.

Step 2: Preparation and Downloading Resources Once you have created your own temperature scale/color scheme, you will need a chart to record the daily temperature and the corresponding yarn color throughout the year. You can download the chart and temperature scale template I have prepared for you.

Yarn Choice: I chose "Tera" yarn. You can use any yarn you prefer, but make sure you have enough different shades available and a sufficient quantity of yarn to complete the entire project.

Step 3: When to start?

  • Beginning of the New Year (January 1st): The ideal start! You begin recording the daily temperature from the very first day.
  • Anytime during the year: If you start the project later, you can either catch up on missed days by looking up past temperatures or choose a later starting period.

TIP: You don't have to crochet every single day. Just record the temperature in your chart and crochet a piece of your turtle every few days or once a week.

A Meaningful Moment in Your Life

A temperature project doesn't have to span exactly 365 days from January to December. You can crochet for any period that is important to you, for example:

  • Your baby’s first year of life.
  • The year of first steps.
  • A school or university year.
  • The year from one birthday to the next.
  • Any significant milestone in your life!

What will we need? We will need:

  • Yarn (in your chosen temperature colors).
  • Crochet hook size 3.0 mm (US size C or D).
  • Toy stuffing (fiberfill).
  • Yarn needle (for sewing and embroidery).
  • Stitch marker.
  • Scissors.

Recommended Yarn – Tera:

Fiber Content: 100% Acrylic

Weight/Yardage: 100 g / 310 m

(approx. 3.5 oz / 339 yds)

Skeins used for the color chart:

39 + = 331

37 - 39 = 87

34 - 36 = 29

31 - 33 = 40

28 - 30 = 32

25 - 27 = 33

22 - 24 = 208

19 - 21 = 37

16 - 18 = 26

13 - 15 = 54

10 - 12 = 80

7 - 9 = 57

4 - 6 = 222

1-3 = 213

0 = 1

-1 - -3 = 92

-4 - -6 = 49

Let’s do this!

Join me and let’s create something truly extraordinary together! We will inspire each other, share our progress, and celebrate our results.

We will use a special hashtag on social media to share photos of our turtles: #TemperatureTurtle

I am already so curious to see the amazing, unique, and one-of-a-kind pillows we will create together!

WE ARE ALL SET! NOW, ALL THAT’S LEFT IS TO WISH YOU A FUN AND COLORFUL CROCHET JOURNEY!

Project Construction: Temperature Turtle 2026

Our turtle is not just an ordinary toy; it is a puzzle of your year. The entire project consists of several key parts that come together at the end to create a harmonious whole:

img_6519.jpeg

  • Bottom Shell (Belly): The stable base of the turtle, which we will begin our crochet journey with. It serves to close the pillow and ensures that the turtle keeps its shape perfectly.
  • Top Shell (Base): Next, we will crochet the upper part of the shell. This is designed to be slightly larger (wider) than the bottom part. This creates a natural bulge, making the turtle look like a perfectly fluffy pillow once stuffed.
  • Temperature Puzzle (Your Color Calendar): This is the heart of the entire project. We crochet individual colored pieces according to the measured temperatures and then attach them like puzzle pieces by sewing them onto the prepared top shell base. Bit by bit, a unique color mosaic of your entire year will grow under your hands. This system ensures that the pieces fit perfectly and the shell remains sturdy.
  • Head, Limbs, and Tail: These parts will give our turtle its final look and the right character! Whether our collective work results in a land turtle or a sea turtle will be decided by your vote. Based on the results, we will then adapt the shape of the limbs (either solid paws or graceful flippers).
  • Assembly: After completing all the puzzle pieces, we will fill the shell with soft stuffing, join it with the bottom part, and sew on the head, tail, and limbs.

My Tip: Thanks to the puzzle system, this project is ideal for everyone. You don’t have to worry about complicated counting of endless rows – you always focus on just one small piece, one day, and one color. It is a joy that comes together piece by piece!
